Morphine: Best of 1992-1995 (2003)

Morphine was a bare-bones bluesy rock and roll band without any guitars riffs. Instead they depended on saxophones, sliding two strings basslines and wry, ironic and sensual vocals. The lead singer was Mark Sandman and he was a minimalist; he said almost as much by what he left out as by what he put in. When asked by a reporter how to describe their music, Sandman called it "low-rock". They released several albums but success in the U.S. was moderate, primarily with the college circuit. They found more acceptance in Europe. This collection does not contain tracks from their last two independent releases. In July, 1999, Sandman collapsed on stage in Italy and died of a heart attack at the age of 49.
