Monster Movie 1969

Monster Movie was Can's quintessential debut album in 1969. At the time this came out, Pink Floyd was working on Atom Heart and The Beatles were producing Abbey Road (orig. post said Sgt. Peppers). Today it's easier to realize just how far ahead of it's time this album was. The final track, Yoo Doo Right, was cut from a six to twelve hour long jam session which mixes elements from blues, progressive, krautrock, tribal beats, psychadellic, jazz, into their own sound. Mooney's vocals are raw and soulful, fitting in with Lou Reed, Velvet Underground, Clash and others.

Sure, I prefer Damo's energy, but this album just wouldn't be the same without Mooney's ragged wail. Many rockers have expressed romantic desperation, but none have approached the level he reaches on "Mary Mary" or "Outside my Door". Orgiastic, playfully dark, and unabashedly honest, this is the Krautrock version of bands like COMUS- wonderfully primal, especially compared to the idealized realms and complicated structures of typical prog. And if your wondering, yes - the tittle is the main reason why I included this album into my Halloween line-up. I just couldn't help it after listening to it again.
