Escape From Noise: Negativland

About the time, Escape from Noise was released, a boy made headlines for killing his family and the press reported that his actions were caused by the song "Christianity is Stupid". Several months later, it became apparent the press had reported a rumor that was a hoax. Negativland claims they did nothing to encourage them and had only one person contact them, the boy's lawyer. But the press harshly criticized Negativland for exploiting the tragedy. Negativland returned their criticism by pointing out how gullible they had been from the beginning. And culture-jamming was born. The experience gave Negativland new material for their next release, Helter Stupid.

"Negativland's origins can be seen more in the cut-ups of early Faust, the radio drama on acid approach of the devilishly funny Firesign Theatre and any number of sonic experimentalists and musique concrète composers. Negativland's saving grace has always been the sheer hilarity of its work. Without being a comedy band per se, and at many points making rather serious observations on the world around it, Negativland's cock-eyed, satiric vision of a barely sane planet often results in the best kind of humor -- the kind that can be enjoyed again and again, especially because of the textured, complex sound of their many astonishing releases." -- answers.com
