Michelle Shocked has had quite a ride in the music industry, including her arrest at a protest that landed on the front page in San Francisco = the album cover and her name. There is also some controversy that her name comes from her mother (a fundamentalist) committing her to a psychiatric hospital due to her punkish folk singing and songwriting talents that she was developing in the 80's. Whatever the story is, it's allowed her to grow into an amazing musical talent, spanning folk, punk, rock, gospel, bluegrass, big band swing, with every release a surprise - and an independent survivor of the music industry. Her life is the stuff movies are made from beginning with her first album, Texas Campfire Tapes, made on a walkman singing around a camp-fire that became a hit in England.

Later, Michelle sued Mercury records to be released from her contract based on the 13th amendment against slavery and out comes her album, Artists Make Lousy Slaves. Since then she's started her own recording company, Mighty Sound, which has recently released her back catalog with bonus tracks. These are from the original cd's without the extra tracks. Michelle can tackle some serious subjects, sometimes satirically, but in an upbeat style without discounting or loosing her intended message.
