Challengers: The New Pornographers

"What's the weight of the world worth to ya, kid
Go write down what you see
And see how far it can go
What's the weight of the world worth to your side
Here is where you got lost
And here is how you got by

And here's the mutiny I promised you
And here's the party it turned into"
-- from "Mutiny I Promise You"

I've been featuring 'Music in support of pirates' during the TPB trial (scheduled to end March 4) and The New Pornographers fit right in. They have a power pop sound which is not typically simple but use unusual, original combinations not normally heard. Their combined talents are an example of the sum of the whole band is different than it's individual parts. Both lead singers/songwriters, A.C. Newman and Neko Case, have continued with equally competitive solo projects and other bands. One reviewer commented "it's like getting 7 bands in one". The New Pornographers have also chosen to remain fan friendly.

"Carl Newman, who writes most of the band's material, has said, "When I seriously started to try to write songs, my main influences were, like, Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb, and Brian Wilson. Those were the guys I kinda looked at their music and went, 'What the hell are they doing here?' I was just fascinated by the structures and the harmonics." Many of Newman's own songs have a similar harmonic complexity. For instance, the titular songs of the band's first two albums use at least six distinct major chords each, while only three major chords can coexist in a single key. The melody of the second of those songs, "The Electric Version", begins with an arpeggiated diminished triad—a rare opening flourish for a pop song." --  Wikipedia01  My Rights Versus Yours
