Morphine

Smokey, moody, cool, seductive, sad, dark and hauntingly beautiful jazzy-blues low-fi trio with wry, cocky, kerouac-like poetic lyrics that's perfect for getting lost on a long drive to nowhere just as the long, hot day cools down in the evening. The cd, Cure for Pain, has a unique energy all of it's own, without notable influences from anyone else. This is on my list of albums I couldn't live without it. Morphine utilizes sax, slide bass and a jazzy drum beat to create seductively, addictive music.

Like Swimming seems to explore more swanky, decedent, fusion to their blues-rock mix from Colley taking a stronger lead, sometimes playing two sax's at once. Sultry evenings were made for music like this. Morphine's style is more fluid here, yet there's still no way to listen without thinking of sex.

The Night was released posthumously and is Morphine's most fully realized, densly structured cd. The stark trio adds additional vocals and instruments to their sound: oud, violins, guitars, keyboards, bongos which offers a bittersweet reminder of what Morphine might have done if Sandman were still alive. This cd is about the night and the people who live there.
