Who is MC Honky?
I Am The Messiah is MC Honky's debut album. According to the website, he is an ex Capital Records janitor during the 50's and 60's. His work there and his passion for music resulted in a mass collection of recordings. Because of his shyness, he began to mix recordings rather than perform live, pioneering in a new style of music he called "self help rock". The story continues that in 1999, Mr. Honky's daughter handed a recording from her father to Mark Everett (The Eels) and he was so impressed that he took on the project of producing MC Honky's album. You can read more here.
The result sounds like Esquivel meets Beck meets weird science and twisted irony, such as Kool G. Murder's appearance in the song "A Good Day to be You". It's unexpected, hilarious and a cool collection of various strange recordings that sound good together.
It's also widely rumored that MC Honky is really an alias for Mark Everett (E) to work anonymously on a side project. Whatever, this is an enjoyable and brilliant gem of a recording.
